Production date 1864 - 1886
Scope and Content(1-2) Two volumes of outgoing letter correspondence signed 'A: Cooper'. Anderson Cooper (d.1902) was the manager of the Provincial Bank Ltd., with premises at 97 South Mall.
The letterbooks are of historical significance in the building of the bank's new premises at South Mall, with a number of letters referring to the temporary premises and the delay in construction of the new premises by the architect William G. Murray [ref. B635/1].
The letterbooks provide and insight to the management of this important Cork bank, with comments about staff and major bank customers as well as opinions on shares and different market sectors including the corn trade [ref. B635/2]. The opinions of Cooper are notably strong and unguarded in many of the letters, offering his personal attitudes as well as information on customers, clients, or bank staff.
Clients of the bank included significant Cork figures of the day such as Sir John Arnott, the founder of a number of prominent department stores, as well as charitable organisations including Cork Blind Asylum and Cork Protestant Orphan Society. The letterbooks evidently previously formed part of a larger series of original records, no longer known to survive.
There is a gap in outgoing letters from Cooper between 11 March 1866 and 14 October 1868.
Also (3) illuminated address to Anderson Cooper, 1886.
