Scope and ContentSubstantial series of valuation lists, accessioned in 2009. The volumes in List 5 are arranged similarly to those in List 4, by Electoral Division [ED]. Despite the dissolution of the Rural District councils in 1925, and changes pre-1925 such as the movement of Charleville EDs into Mallow Rural District, new volumes of valuations begun after this date issued by Cork Health District continue in numbering and arrangement on the original 1899 Rural District Council boundaries. This arrangement is maintained in the present collection. Gaps and some changes of numbers are noted. Unlike List 4 the valuations are no longer revised annually, and there are no special lists, such as ‘amalgamated townlands’, or government property.
Valuation Lists record the names of the occupiers and immediate lessors (usually the owners) of a property, a brief description of the property, its size or acreage, its rateable value, and a reference to its position on the valuation map. No valuation maps are held at this Archive. Lists remained in use for several years, and changes, eg in ownership, were noted. They therefore provide a record of occupancy and ownership of land and other property. They are of use for legal, local, and family history, and document an important aspect of the work of Cork County Council.
Rates on domestic properties were abolished in 1977 and in 1982 agricultural land & buildings were de-rated.
