Scope and ContentPersonal archive from Edward Fitzgerald from Currabinny, Co. Cork. Fitzgerald served in the Royal Navy as Chief Quartermaster (Chief Petty Officer rank) aboard HMS New Zealand in 1913.
Includes large scrapbook of the maiden voyage of the HMS New Zealand, created by Fitzgerald as a diary of events and places visited during the 'world tour' voyage of 1913 [see item: PR79/5].
The collection also includes a small number of personal items, including postcards sent by Fitzgerald to his wife and children whilst at sea, religious poems from the first world war, and a volume of songs presented to Fitzgerald by Henry E. Swinglehurst in Chile [PR79/9].
Edward went on to see service during the First World War, in the Baltic in 1914, and later at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. He was discharged from the Navy in March 1919.
