Etendue et contenuGould family of merchants, land and property deeds, especially indentures for rental of property in Cork City and suburbs. Includes also a very small number of private papers of the Gould family, such as the will of Thomas Goold Fitz George, alderman, (U675A/006), James Gould (U675A/018), and correspondence such as the letter from the Widow Lee to Ignatius Gould (U675A/017).
The items in the colletion cover the period 1623 to 1695 and are of significant interest for the study of the merchant families of Cork City in the early modern period. Other families mentioned, either as witnesses or parties within the deeds, include for example: Gallwey, Myagh, Morrogh, Fleming, Fagane, Someir, Stepney, Gerald and Fitzgerald.
The collection is also significant in referencing placenames and structures within Cork City and its surrounding environs. Examples include Tower Bridge (U675A/002), Knockery (U675A/020), Killindes (U675A/019), Ballyphenane (U675A/013), and Leaheraghmore (U675A/009). A small number of deeds make reference to areas outside County Cork, such as the Indenture between Robert Browne and Ignatius Goold of 17 Jul 1678 (U675A/011), concerning rents and charges in County Kerry.
