Scope and ContentOriginal signed registers of orders of the Assistant County Manager for the West Cork Public Assistance District. Functional areas for which the manager exercises executive power include Children's Acts (child welfare), hospitals (Bantry, Castletown, Clonakilty, Dunmanway, Skibbereen, and Skull), Home Assistance, the County Home in Clonakilty, Medical Charities (relating largely to district dispensary services), and General (eg, transfers and maintainance for patients in external hospitals and institutions).
Recurring subjects include requisitions for medicines and medical supplies for hospitals and dispensaries, employment and management of staff, administration and maintenance of district hospitals, decisions regarding boarded out and hired out children, payments of home assistance, payments of expenses for admission of poor law patients to external hospitals, and staffing and maintenance of district dispensaries. Dispensaries and districts referred to in orders include Allihies, Ardfield, Ballineen, Baltimore, Bantry, Bere Island, Castletown, Clonakilty, Coolmountain, Dromdaleague, Durrus and Kilcrohane, Goleen, Johnstown, Kealkil, Kilcatherine, Skibbereen, Skull, Reendesert, Rosscarbery, Timoleague, Tullagh, and Union Hall.
Registers are generally indexed and orders are signed.
The present orders succeed the minutes of the West Cork Board of Health and Public Assistance (CBPA/WE/M), which body was responsible for public assistance functions and services up to August 1942. The earlier registers of orders are complemented by the Record of Business maintained by the Assistant County Manager for the period Sep 1942 - Nov 1943 (CC/WE/PA/RB), and minutes of the West Cork Public Health and Assistance Committee (CC/WE/PHA/M), which body had a role in considering and making recommendations on manager's orders.
