Scope and ContentRecords of the South Cork County Board of Public Assistance (1924-1942) and its successor body the Board of Public Assistance for the South Cork Public Assistance District (1942-?). The boards had responsibility for the management of the County Home and Hospital; Cottage Hospitals (later referred to as District Hospitals) at Bandon, Kinsale, Macroom, Midleton and Youghal; Cobh District Hospital; home assistance and child wefare; and dispensaries. Includes minutes (1924-1957) and Records of Business (1942-1947).
The records of the Board of Public Assistance document the activities of the Board. The records appear to have been maintained by the secretary of the Board and mainly comprise of documents relating to fortnightly Board meetings and correspondence files. The records relate to the administration, staffing and financial affairs of the County Home and Hospital in Cork City as well as district hospitals in Bandon, Cobh, Kinsale, Macroom, Midleton and Youghal. They also record the activities of the Superintendent Assistance Officers for the City and County, Home Assistance Officers and Medical Officers. The collection includes sensitive personal information including information on patients of the Board, admission of patients to Bessboro Mother and Baby Home and the names of Boarded out Children. The collection is comprised of three series of volumes and 118 boxes of files which have been divided into 5 series. There is some inconsistency in relation to what has survived and there are numerous gaps in the collection. The majority of the files date from 1930 to 1955.
