Scope and ContentOutgoing letterbook of Richard Hare, Cork Merchant, to 265 correspondents in a variety of locations including London, Dublin, Bristol, Limerick, Liverpool and the West coast of Scotland. Letters commence in June 1771, with a gap from June 28th to July 26th, and then a series up to November 12th 1771, with another gap until January 30th 1772 and then a final series up to the end of May 1772 . Many of the letters relate to repetitive financial transactions and reports of market prices, but there are also some personal reflections on the conduct of business, family matters, comments on Cork city, estate management, efforts to purchase lands, and gossip with overseas correspondents. Exports are limited to provisions or animal by-products, and with the exception of soap and candles there is no mention of manufactured items. Export items mentioned include, butter, beef, hides and skins, tallow and glue, and also fish, tripe, vinegar, horn tips, claret, bladders and pork. Besides providing provisions to the specific order of his English correspondents, there are also annual orders for the West Indies.
