Scope and ContentDocuments and notes relating to family history and genealogy of the Matson Family, descendants of John Matson of Sweden and Cork. Present are documents regarding John Matson's career as a mariner and his family life, including a copy of his marriage certificate (1814) and his naturalization certificate (1835). Other items relate to the marine careers of his sons John, Benjamin, and George, and of his grandson John George Matson, most notably a log book of the vessel Superb, 1878-82, which served between London and Australia. George Matson settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia, starting a branch of the family there. Several family death certificates are also present. The final item is a large compilation on the history of the family, and of the Gardiner family of Cork, compiled by Mostyn Douglas Matson and added to by Benjamin Leslie Matson, whose mother was Matilda Lilian Gardiner.
The collection is useful both for family history and marine and maritime research. See item descriptions for full details.
Includes, for example:
1834 (1814) Church marriage certificate John Matson and Rebecca Wheeler, of Christ Church/Holy Trinity Parish;
Deed by Mayor of Cork Andrew Spearing, at the Mansion House in the City of Cork, certifying that Mr John Matson formerly of Sweden, mariner, took an 'Oath of Naturalisation as prescribed for foreign Seamen' (30 May 1835);
Pension application of John Matson, aged 79 (1869), with details of marine service;
Indenture of John George Matson, son of John Matson, Master Mariner, for apprenticeship to Sutton and Donovan, Sailmakers, Cork, ‘also with the Cork Steam Ship Company Sailmakers’, for 7 years (26 July 1863).
Copies from George Matson's log book of the cargo ship 'Superb' on voyages around the world, such as, from London to Melbourne, Australia. With copies of newsclippings mostly relating to Cork and Ireland.
Family history compilation including material relating to the Gardiner Family of Cork, and photographs of Matson family members and of the ship 'Superb'.
