Patient records of St. Kevins Nursing Home, 29 South Terrace, Cork. The records for St Kevin’s contain patient information only. There are no records relating directly to the management of the hospital. The collection contains patient information recorded in bound volumes kept by the hospital, including both personal and medical information. Administrative information is limited to individual patient cases, such as recording admissions, discharges, and the payment of cheques relating to birth or death registrations.
The hospital was legally obligated to process and record birth (Section A) and death (Section B) registrations, and these records predominate the collection (32 volumes). The birth and death registrations comprise official record keeping volumes issued by the state in order for the hospital to fufil its legal obligations in recording births and deaths. These follow state-issued formats in terms of the information captured. The collection's records of births and deaths hold information on both parents, including the mother's maiden name and the father's address and occupation. There are also official records containing information on the adoption of new born babies. This is limited to the name and address of the adoptive parents (Section C).
In addition to records kept for legal purposes, the hospital kept other records structured more loosely on the needs of the institution (11 volumes). In order to support the registration of births, the hospital kept Admission Registers of Birthing Mothers (Section D). These are essentially administrative records on the admission and discharge of mothers, and the payment of medical fees. The records also may contain a signed declaration in the mother's hand that the baby is her own. The hospital also kept records of drugs or medicines administered to patients (Section E). The medicines administered contains the signature of the doctor responsible for the patient.
