'Specification of works to be done in the Bridewell to be erected at Youghall' by James and George R. Pain, Architects, Cork. Detailed specificatons and instructions with accompanying sketches for proposed Bridewell. Specification listed under headings such as, earth excavations, sewers, drains, masonry, cut stone, bell tower, windows, doors, work room, hospital room, roofs, carpentry, guardhouse, prison building, plasterer, painter, glazier, slator, smith. Specifies dimensions and specifications of work, materials or structures in each case such as, masonry, 'All the walls of the Foundations to be of the best description of rubble masonry properly bonded and the Prison Hous. to be well & properly formed not less than 2 feet long…'. (p1) '…The Cut Stone jambs to the windows and doors to be neatly punched and drafted and to be formed to the following sketches…' (6 sketches given). (p4) Plasterer, 'All walls and ceilings to be finished with thru coated work… all the groins of the Cell windows…to be rounded off…'. (p10) [Iron]smith, 'The windows & Cells to be barred as p[er] the following sketches…' ( 6 sketches of windows and door formation). (p11) Concludes, 'All the work to be executed in the best possible manner & with the best materials…'. (p11).

Specification, and Estimates, 'for building a Gaol in the Town of Youghall', by Thomas Kearney [builder/architect]. Gives details of construction such as, 'The Ground to be properly leveled by excavating the high ground to the rear and removing it to the strand…'. (p1) 'The Mason work inwalls to be set in courses not exceeding 16 Incs [inches] in hight [height] each & to be of the best rubble stone that can be procured within a reasonable distance of the Building…'. (p1) 'The boundary or external walls to be of at least 16 feet high above the yards…'. (p2) 'Roofs to be covered with Bangor Ton slates of the size called Queen slates, laid on a double row of sawn laths 2 x [1.5 inches], the slates to have full 3 inches cover…'. (p2) 'The first floor of Hospital, Debtors & Keepers appartments to be floored with best red deal…'. (p3) 'The Doors of Cells & day rooms to be of cast metal of a proper thickness with every necessary fastening & the doors or gates into felons yards to be of wrought iron, all other Doors to be of Plain rabbetted, stuck wainscott [1.5] inch thick…' (p3). 'The entire building to be finished according to plans and this specification in a plain & substantial manner with materials of the best description…'. (p4) Also Estimates, total £1829:2:4. Estimates show costs of each stage and materials of construction such as, 'Sinking the foundation and levelling the ground by removing 2400 cubic yards of earth and rock at 5d per yard' (£50:0:0); '1720 yards of Plastering on Walls, Arches & Ceilings at 1s/1d per yard]' (£93:3:4); '1800 feet of Drafted and punched lime stone in cave and belt courses…1s/1d per foot' (£90:0:0).
