The article traces the history of the family from the clockmaking town of Rohrbach in Germany to the opening by Reinhardt Hilser of his first clock and jewellery shop on South Main St, Cork (1870), and the expanding number of shops owned by members of the family, including Hilser Bros at Market Buildings, Grand Parade, and shops in Bandon, Cobh, Tralee, and (from 1903) Trowbridge in Wiltshire, England.
