Dáta táirgthe 1946 - 1957
Scóp agus InneacharDiaries of Rev Dr Tom Blakely, Presbyterian Minister, for 1946, 1950-51, 1953-55, and 1957 (PR41/1-7). Also present is a notebook (PR41/8).
Diary entries are generally brief, and the handwriting is rather indistinct. Common topics are location, weather, health, meetings, letters, and news. There are also some entries on bible texts and sermons. There are no entries for many days in most volumes. Blakely's passport and ID Card numbers are noted inside the cover of several volumes. The back pages often note names and addresses, accounts, books, and other matters.
PR41/1 (1946) contains no entries for Feb-Apr, or Jun-Aug. In May he notes that he is in Belfast. In September he began a journey east, passing through Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Peking.
PR41/2 (1950) gives Blakely's address as Boardmills, Lisburn, Northern Ireland (inside the cover). He spends much of 1950 in Ireland, as well as some time in England and Scotland.
PR41/3 (1951) contains an entry for 23 Jan 1951 headed 'D. Day', when he boarded a ship for the east. He arrived in Penang on 12 Feb and attended his first (YMCA) staff meeting on 19 Feb.
PR41/4 (1953) gives Blakely's address as Chinese YMCA, 107 Selegie Road, Singapore, 7.
PR41/5 (1954) records Blakely sailing to the UK in July. He travelled on to Northern Ireland, where he took up a pastoral post (in September at [Tuely End]).
PR41/6 (1955) has no entries after 17 April. In April Blakely holidayed in Scotland and England, meeting an editor, and attending 'The King and I' [one of many shows and films attended during visits to London, as recorded in several diaries]
PR41/7 contains no diary entries, but the memoranda pages at the back contain accounts, statistics, and addresses, maninly relating to Blakely's Cork duties. Eg, 'Church statistics at end of 1956/ No of Families: 135...'
PR41/8, a notebook, is largely empty, and evidently contains names and addresses of Chinese students in Singapore. It contains a loose letter from three students dated 25 November 1952, on stationery of the Teachers' Rest House, Singapore. Also present are eight loose slips with names and addresses. No other dates occur.
The collection is of interest in documenting the life and work of an Irish Presbyterian minister, including service in Singapore and travels in the East and throughout the United Kingdom. It sheds light on long haul sea journeys of the period, and on Blakely's social connections and cultural interests. It ends with the minister gathering information for his pastoral work among Cork's Presbyterians.
