Scóp agus InneacharDiaries/Journals of Edward Murphy, Bombardier, Royal Marine Corps, describing his travels and service, in the English Channel and Mediterranean Sea (1883-85) and in the Indian Ocean (1887-89), with related notes and other items.
SM9/1 is titled 'Cruise of the Channel Fleet 1883[-85], Vice Admiral HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, HMS Minotaur Flag Ship'.
SM9/2 begins in September 1887 with an account of the journey (on HMS Ranger) from 'Portsmouth to Bombay 6,960 miles (via Suez & Aden)', followed by summary entries as the fleet progressed through the Indian Ocean, to Muscat, Bahrain, Diego Garcia, Mauritius, Colombo, Rangoon, and elsewhere.
The journals give a fascinating insight into service in the Royal Marines in the the late 19th century, when the British empire was at its zenith, and contain many observations by Murphy on places visited, people met, and experiences enjoyed, reflecting his outlook as a marine and traveller.
