Etendue et contenuPortrait of Daniel Maclise (p469), followed by article on the next page 'Daniel Maclise, R.A.', which seeks to 'review the career' of the painter, tracing his biography and development. It is noted at the end 'our portrait of Mr Mclise is engraved from a photograph by Mr John Watkins, of Parliament-street, Westminster'. The article states, incorrectly, that he was born in 1811. The early influence of his study of the classical casts at the Cork Society of Arts [the Canova casts now at Crawford Gallery of Art] and anatomy studies under Dr Woodroffe in Cork is noted. Reference is also made to his taste for 'medieval chivalry' and his 'purely Celtic imagination... that source at once of his strength and weakness'. Many of his works are listed and dated. His exertions in painting frescos for the House of Lords and new Palace of Westminster [c1844-65] are treated at length, including his investigation of the 'water-glass' technique in Germany. Of the Wellington and Nelson murals, the writer notes 'the artist's besetting fault of overcrowding', but affirms that their merits are 'great and manifold'. His treatment by the Fine-Art Commissioners and the lack of thanks from parliament or the queen is criticised, and it is regretted that he 'has retired, like his old friend Turner, into seclusion'.
The article is followed by another on 'The War in Abyssinia' [incomplete].
