Etendue et contenuThe archives of the Midleton Board of Guardians include large numbers of minute books, indoor relief registers, and financial accounts. The collection is of use to those studying the administrative and social history of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and to students of local and family history. The development of the poor law system, and the local experience of the Great Famine of 1845-49, are subjects of particular interest.
A great many subjects, of which only a few are mentioned here, are covered in the minute books of meetings of the Midleton Board of Guardians. The minutes reflect attitudes to poverty and illegitimacy, and document developments in public health provision and the care of children and the mentally ill. They also provide glimpses of emigration, local land issues, and the rise of nationalism from the 1880s on. See series BG/118/A for further information on minute books and their contents.
The records containing mainly personal information, such as the indoor relief registers, are an important source for genealogy and family history. Financial and administrative records allow one to reconstruct the daily operations of the workhouse. Taken together, the records provide a detailed picture of a vanished but important aspect of Irish life, as experienced in the Midleton area.
