According to the explanation, the prayer was composed by St.Jerome and given by Pope Leo to Charles the Great, King of France (Charlemagne) and carried by Patrick, son of Edmond, son of Patrick Murphy, a rapparee, as a charm for his protection against evil, and an untimely death or drowning at sea, and victory in all battles.
