Donnelly, Jr. The proof is comprised of a title page, an introduction (pp1-9), descriptive sketch of Benn-Walsh's Irish estates taken from his 'Account of My Property and Income' (1829; pp10-12); extensive edited extracts from Benn-Walsh's journals, covering his visits to his Irish estates in 1823, 1824, 1834, 1844, 1848-53, 1855, 1857-61, and 1864 (pp12-116). Donnelly's footnotes on names occurring and other points are included. Also present is a List of Illustrations (4pp) for inclusion in the published version, and a page from Donnelly's letter of 8 October 1973 to Padraig O Maidin [his editor] on the subject of illustrations.
Donnelly's text was published in the Journal of the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society in 1974-75. The present draft adds little to the published version, which is of interest in illustrating aspects of estate management, and of Irish social history, in the middle of the 19th century. The journals mention the names of tenants and of prominent persons with whom Sir John had business and social dealings, including, eg, Thomas Spring-Rice (Lord Mounteagle, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1835-39), Sir Thomas Larcom (Under-Secretary for Ireland 1853-68), Henry Arthur Herbert (Chief Secretary for Ireland 1857-58), Isaac Butt (1813-79, barrister and nationalist politician), Lord Mulgrave (1818-90, colonial governor), John Francis Maguire (1815-72, founder and editor of Cork Examiner and politician), Daniel O'Connell (d1897, MP and son of the Liberator), and Sir William Coddrington (British commander in chief at Crimea). Contemporary events, such as the Crimean War and US Civil War, are mentioned. There are scarcely any direct references to the Great Famine, and only a few to emigration, but the journals are largely concerned with Sir John's work on reform of land tenure and estate administration, which gathered pace in the post-Famine period.
