Ámbito de contenidoTypescript copy of sermon preached (by Dr J. Coholan) on the occasion of the centenary of the Presentation Convent, Bandon. Reference is made to sectarian divisions in the town of Bandon in 1829, and to its history as a town built by and for English Protestants. The speaker traces the 'subjection' and gradual re-emergence of the Catholic population and church through the Penal era, with reference to national and local developments. He explains the role of Catherine O'Neill and her mother in funding the building of the convent, the first mass being celebrated there on 25 March 1829. Sister Mary Augustine Nowlan, of the South Presentation Convent, Cork, was appointed first Superioress of Bandon Presentation Order on 12 May 1829. Its school opened on 20 May 'and that day the parish priest went to the Protestant school in the town and called away the Catholic Girls who were attending there'. O'Neill, having joined the order, became superioress in 1832. She died in 1856.
The sermon traces the origins and development of the Presentation Convent and its girls' school, and presents a Catholic perspective on aspects of the history of 'Orange' Bandon.
