c.1890-1920
Fecha 1880 - 1920
Ámbito de contenidoPhotographic prints, created or collected by Wilkie Photographers, including 3 items from Guys photographers of Cork (U399/8, /9, /83). All are undated, however, most appear to date from the 1890- 1910 period, but a number may be slightly earlier or later.
Mainly consists of photographs of streets, buildings, quays and bridges in Cork City, particularly Patrick's Street, Grand Parade, South Mall, and Merchant's Quay (for example, U399/38, /41, /45, /56, /79). Sailing ships, steam ships and electric tramways are in evidence in some of the photographs. 6 items relate to Queens College / University College Cork, including the exterior of the Aula Maxima; and the exterior of the Crawford astronomical observatory (U399/18, /22, /81 etc.).
4 items relate to the 1902 Cork Exhibition buildings and grounds. (U399/1, /2, /4, /74)
Only 7 studio / portrait photographs are present in the collection (see U399/48 - /52, /90 , /91), presumably representing only a tiny fraction of the output of Wilkie & Sons Photographers over a number of decades.
14 photographs relate to the town of Queenstown (now Cobh), County Cork, including some of the harbour (U399/58 and /60), and including 3 of the warship HMS Triumph (U399/61, 64, 69).
Also found are a single items relating to other locations, including, Monkstown, Glenbrook, pilgrims at Gougane Barra, Youghal Blackwater bridge, and Ross Castle in Killarney (U399/46)
Most prints are of fair to good quality. Some of the prints may also be early copies of similar items, possibly from the Lawrence Collection.
