In February 2013 James O'Shea produced an unpublished transcript of the letterbook, with an introduction and appendices, entitled Early Cork Trade: The Letterbook of William Hovell 1683/86.
The letterbook documents the development of trade in Cork at a key period, when, despite political turbulance, the city was establishing itself as one of the major ports of the British empire, and in particular of its trade with the Americas. O'Shea provides a family tree and appendices showing customers, commodities, and ports traded with, including London, Bristol, Barbados, Tenerife, Genoa, Cadiz, and Lisbon. Hovell's letters also shed some light on the political events of the period, and on the character of this English Protestant settler, who formed part of an important trading community and political grouping.
