Scope and ContentTwo small volumes recording supply of water [also known as 'water bunkering'] to ships at quays and other berths in Cork Port.
SM661/1 is a stub book covering the period 24 Mar-6 Aug 1942, and noting stub number, agent, vessel, quay lying at, quantity of water, cost, date of supply and date of payment. Eg, No 2707 'Water for Ships', Agent: Clyde Shipping Co; Vessel: Skerries; Lying at: Patrick's Quay; Quantity: 6,800 Gallons; Amount: £3 : 8 : 0; Date of Supply: 4/4/42; Date of Payment: 12/5/42'. 100 stubs.
SM661/2 is a larger book containing a record of payments for water requested, for the period 12 Jan 1-10 Mar 1950. Each page is numbered and headed 'Cork Corporation', and records similar information to above, ending with the printed statement 'I shall be glad to receive payment of above as soon as possible. Edward J Twomey, City Accountant'. Notes on the back of many forms seem to record the time taken to supply the water. Eg, 'Date: 27/2/50; Agent: City of Cork Steam Packet Cork; St Patrick's Quay; Vessel: Kenmare; Berth: St Patrick's Quay; Water supplied: 11,000 gallons; Received by: L Barry; Rank: Carpenter; Cost of Water £5 : 7 : 6; Overtime (if any): [blank], Total' [as above]. Note on reverse reads 'Started 4:30pm, completed at 5:15pm'. c100 forms
The volumes record an aspect of daily activity in Cork port in the mid-20th century, including the names of ships and shipping agents of the time.
