Form und InhaltSet of legal deeds, mostly involving a Rev Samuel Thomas Harman as a party [see 'Archival History']. The deeds refer to the Lawton, Harman, Deane, Savage, and Hodder estates. There are many connections, not always clear at first, between most of the deeds present. For this reason they have been arranged in chronological order. A few items present appear unconnected with the other deeds. There are 30 items in total, which have been described in the descriptive list for this collection.
Items SM84/3, /4, and /6 relate to the 1772 marriage between and estate of John Lawton and Ann Warren of Cork. SM84/16 is an 1846 complaint by inheritors of legacies under the will of John Lawton (father of John already mentioned), made against ST Harman and the other executors of the estate of Joshua Harman, who had come to hold lands at Garrouse, Co Limerick, formerly owned by Lawton and out of which legacies are to be paid. Items SM84/18-20 also concern Joshua Harman's estate.
Items SM84/10-12 and SM84/23-28 concern the estate of John Conlon Deane, including lands in Muskerry and charges in favour of Osbourne Savage, concerning non-payment of which Savage's heirs, including ST Harman, made a complaint in 1877. SM84/29 and /30, relating to the estate of Francis Hodder, seem also to be connected to the Deane estate, with several Deane deeds referred to in an 1897 schedule (SM84/30).
Some of the other land-related deeds occurring may be connected in some way with one or other of the above estates. Other items include SM84/8 a deed appointing ST Harman manager of Cork properties of John Wilby, a merchant in Portugal (1822); and SM84/22 a complaint concerning the estate of Thomas Henry Walker, one of his children claimed to be illegitimate (1870).
