Scope and ContentH/1.
(4 Sep 1870 - 25 May 1901) Bound photocopy of the diary section of the MS. Journal of John Rearden Jnr., wine merchant, Cork (62pp photocopy of c124pp original) The diary contains some descriptions of his travels, such as to Co.Kerry. It contains personal writings on events, spritual matters, and observations. It offers glimpses of life in a wealthy middle class family in late 19thc. Cork, including summer seaside houses, foreign trips, good marriages of daughters and their dowries. Also comments on the weather, illnesses, deaths of friends and relatives, smallpox vaccination, some events in Cork. Many of the entries are written while staying in Mount Mellary Abbey on retreat. Recounts buying the old Turkish Baths (Grenville Place) which he is converting to 2 new houses. The remainder of the diary comprises a separate section containing a selection of quotations from his favourite authors. (See H/2 for transcript)
