Scope and ContentBlack and white photograph depicting interior view of the billiard room at Coolmain Castle, Kilbrittain, Co. Cork. The room is dominated by a large and elaborate fireplace in a Tudor or Romantic revival style, complete with large eagle surmounting top of woodwork panelling and an antique heating stove. A number of doorways, floor coverings, and wall panneling are also visible within the photograph.
The image is captioned: 'The Billiard Room, Coolmain Castle in 1940: Home of Donn Byrne, Novelist'. The reverse of the photograph carries an inscription: 'Reg.356. Carved wooden surrounds to stone in Coolmain Castle'. The castle is known as the last place of residence of Irish neo-romantic novelist Donn Byrne who died in 1928 and is buried close to the castle.
