Scope and ContentFiles, correspondence and other records of the Cork Sculpture Park Committee. Includes the following:
1. File, draft minutes of meetings of the committee, 1974-1990, with rough notes to 1993. [formerly placed in U721/5 'Symposium Correspondence' file below]
2. File, 'Sculpture Park', containing committee correspondence, 1969-1981. Includes dealings with Cork Corporation, the Arts Council, various artists, and exhibitions. At the back of the file are notes on sitings of sculptures in Fitzgerald's Park, and a rough estimate of valuations (1978). Present are four letters from Seamus Murphy, sculptor, regarding pieces for the 1969 outdoor exhibition (1968-70). In addition, there is a letter to Murphy regarding payment for work (1970) and a letter from his widow Mairead to the committee regarding purchase of his work 'Dreamline'. These have been placed at the front of the file.
3. File, 1969 Outdoor Exhibition, containing correspondence 1968-71 on all aspects of that major exhibition, including letters regarding movement and return of sculptures, lists of exhibits, related costs, and other correspondence.
4. File, 'Sculpture'69' an exhibition by contemporary Irish artists. Includes correspondence on works, lists of exhibits, and correspondence with the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union regarding the work 'Two Figures' [by Oisin Kelly]. Also present is a copy extract from minutes of Cork County Council,30 May 1975, thanking the ITGWU for donating the work to remain standing outside County Hall.
5. File, 'Symposium Correspondence', mainly consisting of correspondence from the period 1984-88, mostly relating to the symposium and the symposium catalogue and a national directory. Some general correspondence up to 1994 is also on the file, including letters regarding restoration/cleaning of Seamus Murphy's 'Virgin of the Twilight' [1994]. Also present is a copy agreement with the Arts Council under a scheme for the purchase of works at half price by state-sponsored bodies (1979), with related correspondence, and items relating to reorganisation of the committee.
6. File, Cork 800 Sculpture Symposium 1985, including correspondence, account statements, notes on artists and works, and two plans for the layout of sculptures on Winthrop St. The file continues up to 1988, including letters regarding the future development of the committee.
7. File, 'New Sculpture Committee,' on reorganistion of the committee into Cork Sculpture Advisory Committee/Cork Sculpture Society, 1989-92. Includes draft constitutions and correspondence with members, Cork Corporation, and the National Sculpture Factory, Cork. Also present are minutes of the Arts Committee, Cork Corporation, 20 Feb 1990, which received a deputation from the committee.
8. File, Catalogues, notes on artists, some photos and slides, and rough notes [formerly loose matter, possibly relating to 1985 sculpture symposium]. Catalogues include Open Air International Sculpture Exhibition (Cork, 1961), 'Sculpture'69' (Cork), and 'Ordering Wood' by Gerard Cox at Crawford Municipal Gallery (Cork 1988). A set of slides relating to Cox and a set of photo negatives present. 14 other photographs present, many evidently relating to the 1985 symposium.
The collection documents the work and achievements of an important public art committee from the 1960s to the 1980s, and shed light on the work of several Irish and international sculptors and on the public display of their work in exhibition and permanent settings, such as the sculpture collection at Fitzgerald's Park.
