Scope and ContentBound volume containing 7 separate directories/almanacs.
1. County and City of Cork Post Office General Directory 1844 - 1845, compiled and edited by Alexander Aldwell, Cork, printed and sold by F. Jackson, 70 South Mall
Includes the nobility, gentry, magistracy, professions, trades, shopkeepers and principle farmers of 45 post and market towns also established church, dissenters and roman Catholic clerical directories.
For Cork City includes professions, merchants, traders, shopkeepers, public boards, institutions, establishment, history, trade, statistics and general borough list; also Miscellaneous includes post offices in the UK, mail coach and packet routes; also Parliamentary directory of peers etc, legislative enactments, government departments, law courts, the census, fairs and local and general information. Includes, for example, (pp169-254) Cork City Post Office Directory- alphabetical list of names and addresses of traders/professions etc followed by (pp255-276) Cork City Professions and Trades Directory arranged by occupation; followed by County Towns Directory ; list of Patrons and Subscribers; list of Assurance Offices; followed by several pages of advertisements.
2. The County and City of Cork Almanac, Post-Office Synopsis and Letter Guide 1844, edited by Alexander Aldwell. (With frontispiece litchographcs printed drawing containing coat of arms of the city.) Contains miscellaneous information, such as, monthly tables of sun, moon and tide phases and cycles, meteorological tables, florists and gardeners calendar, fares for gingles and carriages, professions, Munster fairs, fire engines in the city, County Establishment, abstract of poor law amendment act, wine trade, harvest labourers proceeding to England, hints respecting Cholera, scientific and charitable institutions, benevolent institutions, Cork Poor Law Union, clerical/ecclesiastical establishment, charities and schools, City Establishment, also statistical table of populations of Cork city and county parishes, towns and baronies c1841; followed by several pages of advertisements.
