Scope and ContentMinute book of Mallow Industrial and General Development Association, 13 Mar 1958 - 12 Apr 1960. Following the meeting of 13 March at which the association was proposed, a provisional committee met on 2 April to form recommendations on the scope and administration of the association. 'Aims and objects' proposed included 'to establish a body which would be a recognised source of contact for local and existing interests', 'to develop existing industries and local trade', 'to secure new industries', 'to develop tourism', to form sub-committees as required, to assist existing local organisations.
The new association was acclaimed at a public meeting of 9 April, and the first meeting of members took place on 23 April. The following existing local organisations subscribed as members:
Mallow Workers Council; Irish Transport and General Workers Union; Duhallow Hunt Club; Mallow Labour Party; Amalgamated Engineering Union; Mallow Town Traders Association; Mallow Irish Country Women's Association; Mallow Horticultural Society; Mallow Vintners Association; Clock [House Interests Ltd]; Fianna Fail Party; Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association; Fine Gael Party.
General meetings were held quarterly, and committee meetings monthly. Matters considered included the commercial possibilities of clay deposits in Ballymagooley, local bus services, developing coarse fishing, the erection of a swimming pool in the town, planting of trees, organisation of a 'Civic Week' for Mallow, Christmas lighting, a new water scheme, and communications with Government and private industries regarding new industrial possibilities for the town.
At the meeting of 11 Nov 1958 local traders complained of provision of goods to employees by Mallow Sugar Co. At the next general meeting on 9 Dec it was proposed 'that all workers' wives should buy Irish Golden Syrup'. The meeting of 11 Aug 1959 discussed preparation of a brochure promoting the town to 'prospective industrialists '. At the meeting of 12 Jan 1960 correspondence with Messrs Lee Cooper Ltd, England, on setting up in Ireland was read. The meeting of 12 Apr 1960 discussed arrangements connected with the first evening race meeting to be held in Mallow.
After 9 Feb 1959 meetings evidently occurred less regularly, and it appears the association ceased to meet after July 1960 (when minutes of the last recorded meeting were signed). The minute book is an interesting record of attempts by a county town to address the problems of unemployment and lack of industrial development which were endemic in Ireland in the 1950s, prior to rapid economic growth of the 1960s.
