Jan 2nd 1797: Mentions French Fleet at Bantry Bay; 'our situation ever since I recieved your letter has been such as prevented my reply nor is our alarm yet over. The French Fleet Anchored in Bantry Bay on the 22nd with 13 or 14 Ships of the Line & Four Smaller vessels full of land forces. The Wind prevented their getting far into the bay on the 27th they were all blown out, since that time six or seven of them are returned and are at anchor...we have now A large force to the Westward that will dispute every inch of lande with them if they advance...'
