Production date 1903 - 1923
Scope and ContentThe collection contains a history of the Bolster family by George Bolster, and a Co Cork Commission of the Peace issued to George Hawkes Bolster in 1903.
SM55/1 Bolster Family History by George Bolster, Springville, Kanturk, Co Cork, 21 July 1923. The author explains in the preface that he is dealing with the branch of the family in the parish of Kilshannig, Co, Cork, from the time of Richard Bolster of Scarra (b.c.1720), although he does discuss origins and the family's arrival in Ireland ('not later than 1585'). A dedicatory note [to Bolster connections receiving a copy] explains that appreciations of the lives of ancestors born after 1800 are not given, although Appendix C records 'Imperial Services of Members of the Family', including in the Great War. Other appendices include Bolster pedigrees, Intermarried families, personal recollections of George Bolster RN, and a Glossary of place names. A note of the wife and children of George Hawkes Bolster, and of the death of Simeon WK Bolster in 1957, are placed inside the front cover. A book-plate showing the arms and motto of Bolster occurs on an early page. 61pp
SM55/2 County of Cork Commission of the Peace for George Hawkes Bolster of Laurentinum, Doneraile, Co Cork, issued on 7 May 1903 by King Edward VII to the Irish Privy Council, and signed by J Nugent Lentaigne, Clerk of the Crown and Hanapur and Permanent Secretary to the Lord Chancellor of Ireland. Partly printed, the names of all Co Cork commissioners have been added. With hard seal affixed [black, showing young queen enthroned]. Envelope addressing the commission also present.
In addition to documenting the genealogy of the Bolster family and connections in Cork and elsewhere, SM55/1 also gives much information on the military and colonial service of many family members, while George Bolster's own memoir reflects on his childhood during the Great Famine in North Cork, as well as his naval experiences, and sport (shooting and fox hunting) in north Cork. For example, he mentions being introduced to Prince William of Prussia ('now ex-Kaiser'), and dicusses the origins of fox hunting in Duhallow around 1800. In his preface, Bolster thanks Dr Berry of the Irish Public Records Office and expresses sympathies on that office’s destruction in 1922.The author is a great-great-grandson of Richard Bolster of Scarra, and a grandson of George Bolster of Curraghbower (1776-1842). This latter was also the grandfather of George Hawkes Bolster, JP(1852-1908), 'sometime Honorary Secretary, Duhallow Hunt'. SM55/2 refers to him, and contains a useful list of Cork's justices of the peace in the early 20th century.
