Scope and ContentMS. letter from Frederick Douglass, Limerick, to 'My Dear Sir', Richard Dowden, expressing thanks for the Dowden's hopitality and attention during his 'protracted' stay in Cork. Refers to being 'trampled reviled and maltreated by white people', taught to see them as his 'natural eminences'. He refers to Dowden's willingness to 'devote time, talent and official influence to the advancement of benevolent objects ', despite his 'many public cares and weighty responsibilities', as Mayor of Cork, and Miss Jenning's interest in his 'mission'. He has received 'the token of your esteem' which he wears on the little finger of his right hand, 'representative of the holy feelings with which you espoused and advocated my humble cause'.
