Scope and Content1. 7 Jan 1845 MS. letter from Thomas Davis, 67 Baggott Street, Dublin, to Richard Dowden, regarding Dowden's election to the Committee of the '82 Club. Daniel O'Connell is president, Grattan, Lord French, McLoughlin, and Roche vice presidents. It is to dine on the anniversary of the Dungannon meeting, the declaration of independence in 82. Object is to forward the national cause. Subscription is 1 guinea per year. He hopes the club will pioneer the way for an assembly. Urges him to work for a Provincial College, etc. (3pp)
2. 16 Mar 1845 As above. The Committee of the '82 Club note Dowden's presence at the first dinner on 16 April is 'most important', and the toast they wish him to propose and speak to is 'The men who have rendered Ireland illustrious in science'. Suggests referring to Sir William Hamilton, Prof. Kane, McCullagh, Lloyd and Trinity College Dublin. Asks if Dowden has got his uniform yet, and refers to details such as collar, gifts, etc, 'The sight of a national uniform...will put heart into the people...', etc. (7pp)
