CreatorCork County Council
Production date 1906 - 1910
Scope and ContentCork County Council Schedules listing new works and repair and maintenance works, primarily for roads, for which contracts have been approved. Entries are arranged by the county's Rural Districts.
The piece of road and contract involved are noted, and the amount of contract passed. The records resemble schedules of Grand Jury presentments (Grand Juries were responsible, inter alia, for passing contracts for district roads and civil engineering works prior to creation of County Councils under the Local Government (Ireland) Act, 1898). The volumes record passing of contracts where the work is to be carried out by a named private citizen, usually either a local contractor, or a local landowner who would benefit from the work, as generally occurred under the Grand Jury system. Increasingly, however, contracts were passed for direct labour and other schemes, to be carried out by the County Surveyor or otherwise, directly on behalf of the County Council itself. Works not contracted for and indexed lists of payments recommended are also noted.
The volumes document the transition from the Grand Jury system to the County Council system in the development of the county's roads, and shed light on the work achieved. Earlier or later schedules of this type are not present.
