Scope and ContentMS. copy of Charles the 2nd Charter to Sir St.John Broderick, Knight, of the Manor of Midleton, in the baronies of Imokilly, Barrymore, Fermoy, and Orrery. Lists the various lands and properties and parks within the Manor, and lists various powers given to Broderick, such as; authority given to hold Courts Leet, Courts Baron and a Court of Record, to keep a prison, and to act as Clerk of the Market. The free town and borough of Midleton to have a 'body Pollitick and corporate' to consist of a Sovereign, 2 Bailiffs and 12 Burgesses. William Hutching is appointed free burgess and 1st Sovereign of the town. Other burgesses and bailiffs also listed. Freemen may also be admitted, a Common Seal used, a common hall or Tholsell built for meetings of the corporation and guilds, and byelaws may be passed. Broderick and his heirs to have the power to appoint the Recorder and Town Clerk. Sovereign and Bailiffs to be elected annually on the Thursday after the Feast of St.James the Apostle, or 3 days following the death or removal of the Sovereign. Oath of Recorder given, 'I shall be a true Leige Man to our Sovereign Lord the King...and true to the franchises of the sd. Town of Middleton...and truely obey the Sovereign of the sd. town in all things Lawfull...' (p23). Oath of Bailiffs, oath of the Freemen. Sovereign or deputy to act as coroner. Soveriegn, Bayliffs and Burgesses to elect 2 of their members to Parliament. Guild of Staple Mercatory to be formed in the same manner as the City of Dublin.
