Scope and ContentFile, entitled 'Skidmore Trust' concerning the administration of the Skidmore or Skiddy Charity. The file begins with an extract from the Council Book of the Corporation of Cork regarding the 1584 will of Stephen Skidmore als Skiddy, followed by correspondence between Cork Corporation, the Vintner's Company of London, and the Atlas Assurance Co Ltd, regarding the origins of the arrangement whereby the latter firm arranges for the passing of the sum of £24 per annum under the Trust from the Vintner's Company to the Lord Mayor of Cork. A letter of 17 Nov 1930 from District Inspector [Atlas Assurance] to the Branch Manager, Dublin, explains that it originated with William Lumley Perrier, original secretary and trustee of the Trust, who was an agent for Atlas Assurance in Cork. Atlas Assurance was taken over by Royal Exchange Assurance [in 1964] and, following a 1968 merger, became part of Guardian Royal Exchange. The annual remittance was paid by the Vintners to Atlas Assurance, who forwarded it to Bernard Dooly & Son, auctioneers, Cork, evidently acting as receivers on behalf of Cork Corporation.
A copy letter dated 29 Oct 1930 [sent 17 Nov 1930] from Francis Dooly, Receiver, to the Town Clerk, Cork Corporation, outlines the history of the charity, including its vesting in trustees in 1848. Most of the subsequent correspondence relates to the annual payment of remittance by the Vintner's Company. Other items include the following:
Printed text, Lord Mayor's Broadcast, Appeal for Skiddy's Home, Radio Eireann, 26 Jan 1964;
Open letter, dated 27 Jan 1964, from Sean MacCarthy, Lord Mayor of Cork, to 'Dear Citizen' with an appeal to the people of Cork to provide funding for a new building for Skiddy's Charity;
letter, dated 13 Oct 1975, from Clerk, Vintners Company, London to Chief Accountant, Guardian Royal Exchange, South Mall, Cork enclosing cheque for £24;
letter, dated 2 Nov 1978, from F.J. Herron, Branch Manager [Guardian Royal Exchange, Cork] to Messrs. B. Dooly and Son, Marlboro Street enclosing cheque for £24 from the Vintners Company.
The file sheds light on the continued administration of this long-running Cork charity for much of the 20th century.
