Scope and ContentMounted photograph of the old General Post Office, Pembroke Street, Cork, inscribed 'GPO Cork. 1860-1903 Built for and occupied by Cork Savings Bank 1824-1842'.
Neo-classical building with corinthian columns. The scene includes gas street lamps, advertising billboards, cobblestoned street. A small part of the upper right portion of the building seems to be sketched in in pencil, perhaps covering an over-exposed, blank area. One billboard reads 'Post Office/John Delany & Co/Contractors/Henry Street/Cork', suggesting the photo dates from c1900-03.
The contractor for this original 1824 Savings Bank, later old GPO building, was Sir Thomas Deane.
Copy print of the photograph also present, 25cm x 20cm.
(The site of the old Cork GPO building, together with the old Theatre Royal (built 1759-1774) on Georges Street /Oliver Plunket Street, plus the site of buildings on the West corner of the intersection of Georges Street and Pembroke Street, were used to construct the new Cork GPO, which opened in 1877.)
(Sir Thomas Deane, with his brother Kearns Deane, also designed the new Cork Savings Bank building at Lapp's Quay/Parnell Place, which opened in 1842).
