Scope and ContentTS. Letter from Lord Stamfordham, (Private Secretary to King George V), Balmoral Castle, to Sir John Scott, High Sheriff of the City of Cork, Wellington House, Cork, in reply to a letter from Scott to have the Lord Mayor of Cork (Terence MacSwiney), released from prison. The King recognises the importance of the suggestions made by Scott as His Majesty's representative as High Sherriff, '...the King's Clemency can only be exercised if His Majesty is so advised by his responsible Ministers'; the 'King deplores the grave condition of affairs in Ireland so grievously affecting the happiness and welfare of his Irish people, and sympathises with all who, like yourself are, as his representatives, endeavouring to carry out under especially trying circumstances the responsibilities of their position'.
