Scope and ContentMS. notes/material on the history and folklore of the Cullen/Millstreet/Drishane area, collected by Fr. William Ferris at Station Masses.
Includes folkore on the Great Irish Famine, Civil War, Anglo-Irish War, plantation and Cromwellian wars, roads and boreens, flora and fauna, rivers, cemeteries, religious institutions, priests and nuns, immigrants, landlords, pastimes, literature and poetry, O'Keeffe family, psychic occurances, townland and field names, hedge schools, Protestants, land agitation, fenians, churches, mass rocks, native families, tragedies, battles, O'Sullivan Beare, McCarthys, convents, mansions, 18th century, penal period, antiquities, ancient monuments, archaeology etc. Usage of the Irish language is also indicated, one example being the recording of a nickname given to the father of Edward Walsh, 'tarbh son bhfaghus', loosely meaning 'bull of the autumn' (ref: U60/2/17).
The MSS. appear to have been used by Father Ferris in his 'History of Millstreet', 1937 (reprinted 1972 and 1982), originally published under the pseudonym Timothy Barker as "Sraid an Mhuilinn - a history of its people, by its people, for its people".
