Scope and ContentCopy of pages from Beaufort's Tour diary for 8-9 (September) 1788, when he visited Cork. On the 9th: 'Breakfast this morning, by invit. at Shanahan's with Mr Pack - to see his Portfolios' [Evidently the works of Martin Shanahan on White St. Shanahan was an architect who had travelled extensively, especially in Italy, with his patron, Frederick Hervey, successively bishop of Cloyne and of Derry, later 4th Earl of Bristol. Shanahan acted as agent for Hervey's Downhill estate in Derry, building its mansion and being involved in several other works, before returning to Cork c1783 and opening a marble works and stone cutting business]. Beaufort expresses delight at Shanahan's drawings of ancient baths, Raphael's Vatican, and other scenes, and admires his chimney pieces ('much cheaper than in Dublin'), one of which is being made for Lord Bristol. The excerpt also refers to visits and dinners with others, names mentioned including Dr Lamilliere, Mr Alworth, Captain Hamilton ('a great painter and draftsman'), Mahon, Murphy, and Crawford. To the left of the second page is a sketch by Beaufort of a carving 'Liberty & Loyalty, supporting a group - in relief', including Hibernia and Britain. Location of original carving or drawing not indicated. A note below refers to 'Grogan a young painter of merit here'. [Nathaniel Grogan, painter, 1740-1807].
The excerpt provides an insight into Cork's artistic milieu in this important period for Irish (and Cork) art and architecture.
