Scope and ContentCopy of 'Annals Bandon Convent', 1825-1939, tracing major developments affecting the Convent, its girls' school, and the Catholic Church and community in Bandon, including the first plans to establish a convent (1825), its opening (1829), and its centenary (1929). The names of and other information on many religious community members and postualants, including admission and death, are recorded. There are also references to number of children attending the convent school, and to numbers receiving confirmation. There is a 'more complete account' of the foundress, Mother Mary John O'Neill, following the entry for 1868. The annals resume again at 1856, providing some information for the period 1856-1868 not recorded on earlier pages (evidently a new volume was opened). In 1893 Mother Xavier (Fanny) Lynch, Superioress, died, and an account of her life is given, noting that she taught in the poor school established by Fr Mathew, with which the foundress was also connected; reference is also made to sectarianism in Bandon at the time of the Convent's foundation. In the entry for 1920 disturbances in the town are noted, eg, shooting of Constable Mulhern, smashing of windows by soldiers, and (3 Dec) '3 Bandon Boys shot last night by Crown Forces'. Subsequent violence and political events were also noted, eg, shooting of policeman and two soldiers on 25 Feb 1921. Throughout, smaller developments such as the introduction of gas and electricity, and the purchase of the community's first gramaphone and radio (for 1932 Eucharistic Congress) are recorded.
The annals document the history of the Presentation Order in Bandon, and shed light on its role in providing the town's first Catholic girls' school. They also reflect political and social developments in the town and country at large.
The item was prepared by Fr. C Walsh, Mayfield, Cork, in 1975. The present item is a photocopy of Walsh's work.
