Etendue et contenuHandwritten financial statement headed ''An account of what I laid out for my sons since they went into their apprenticeship.'' The author's name and the type of apprenticeships entered are not given. The sons' names are James, Henry, Thomas, George, and St John. The information is arranged in columns headed by date, 'what things for them' [ie, items purchased], and a column for each son. Items include instruments [eg, a quadrant], wigs, clothes, stationery, furniture and luggage, living expenses, and other items such as 'grinding Harry's razors' (21 January 1764). Other items include (25 February 1766) 'to the man that Harry struck', and (3 July 1770) 'to freight of Tom's chest from London to Bristol'. Total expediture on each son in the period covered was as follows: James: £139 15s 2d; Henry: £139 2s 2d; Thomas: £111 14s 7d; George: £121 13s 9d; St John: £44 16s 4 and a half pence. A note at the end adds 'I paid Mr Clarke with George the first year 30ls [£30] the second year 10ls'. The original item is fragile and a photocopy is also present.
