Scope and ContentDigitally printed copies of photographs from two Victorian photographic albums, thought to be from the Evanson/Hurst family in the Douglas area of Cork. Each sheet contains images front and back, usually two on each side. The sheets have been numbered, but the present order may not reflect that of the original albums.
Sheet 27 shows the front or back cover of one album, and a note inside the cover reading 'Presented to [M Hurst] by Himself July 1879'. Sheet 8 shows the back of one photo with the date 12 Aug [18]62 added.
Captions have been added to some photos, indicating family or, in many cases, public figures, eg, sheet 9, 'The Duke of Connaught'. Family members named include Aunt Susan, George Dunne, R Prendergast Jr, Uncle Robert, Julia, Muriel, Douglas, Uncle K and Aunt M, Mother, and 'myself when young' [M Hurst?. Sheet 17]. Many of the photos show children, and nearly all are formal portraits, with studio names in a few cases visible on the reverse of some photos. Colour tints have been added to a few. One of the albums features a decorative 'rustic window' printed border.
The copy images shed light on the dress, lifestyle, and social world of an evidently affluent 19th century Cork family.
