His monthly salary is £16 13s 4d, and total recipts for these years amount to £269 8s 7d. There follow 103pp of dated entries documenting expenditure, 1885 - 1893. Items include foodstuffs, insurance, coal, and clothes. Items at Christmas include gifts for 'Mag & Alicia'. Other items seem to refer to his children.
On page 1, entries for 15 Jan 1885, he records fire insurance for No 19 South Terrace. The following 31 July he paid six months' rent on this house. On page 2, entry for 9 Feb 1885, he writes 'expenses Corporation fees Taking out my Freedom'. Income tax on collecting harbour dues is a recurring item, eg, 3 Feb 1885.

On page 45, entry for 30 Nov 1888, he notes 'came into House 35 South Terrace this day'.
The final entries are for Jan 1893, after which a number of pages seem to have been cut out. A summary of some figures occurs near the end of the volume.
The ledger provides an insight into the household life and budgeting of a family man from the professional classes in the latter part of the nineteenth century in Cork. Also present is a rough note of entries from the ledger by the donor (1p).
