Scope and ContentVolume containing minutes of meetings of the Cork Civic Party, with lists of members and subscribers on the opening pages. These include individuals and businesses. The volume records annual meetings, executive, committee, and special meetings.
13 Jun 1946 Annual general meeting considers new rules, appoints executive committee (5 councillors to be ex officio members), and Lord Mayor proposed to go forward again for mayoral election on 25 June.
3 Jul 1946 Deputation from Master Butchers' Association received to discuss bye-laws on sale of meat.
5 Dec 1947 Lord Mayor M Sheehan nominated as a candidate for the general election. [Sheehan and a second candidate withdrew, 2 Jan 1948. Sheehan later explained that he was running as an independent, as previously agreed with William Dwyer (22 Jan 1948)]
17 Dec 1947 Special General Meeting discusses the election, and hears from Mr E Finn, Mitchelstown, regarding the 'grave menance' presented to ordinary traders by cooperative societies, which can compete free from income tax.
22 Jan 1948 Mr TL Egan, former chairman, tenders his resignation from the party.
16 Mar 1948 Annual General Meeting [newscutting with report of the meeting inserted].
Sep 1948 Agreed, 'that the Party should take a very definite stand against the introduction of Direct Labour' [for Cork Corporation schemes].
4 Nov 1948 Party criticises Cork Corporation's 'dog-in-a-manger attitude with the cleared sites' [derelict sites].
26 Nov 1948 Special meeting to consider proposed purchase of Pre-Fab houses [for social housing].
The list of subscribers at the front of the volume illustrates the level of support the Party received from many of the city's best-known businesses at this time, while the minutes document its activities and policies during the period of its greatest strength in Cork city local government.
