Scope and ContentScrapbook and file of loose items relating to Bernard 'Barney' Byrne, and his career as an RIC detective.
SM11/1 Scrapbook, c 1895 - 1920, containing news clips, photographs and ms. letters. The letters (pp40-47) are chiefly congratulatory and were sent to Byrne in 1911, when he received the King's Police Medal, and in 1913 when he received promotion. Many of the news clips deal with petty session appearances of persons arrested by Byrne. They include suspected embezzlers, fraudsters, murderers and deserters. He was particularly well known for 'making important arrests of fugitives on board American liners visiting Queenstown' (newscutting, p1). Photos include some of Byrne in uniform (p1), and one of him on the cover of the Royal Irish Constabulary Magazine of March 1912 (p2), while p66 seems to contain photos of Byrne in later life. 80pp
SM11/2 Folder of loose items including the following: (i) newscutting, Kerry News, 27 Sep 1905, regarding 'Ardfert Tragedy' [Byrne had arrested the two murder suspects involved at Queenstown, see above, p77]; (ii) newscutting containing 'Provisions as to Compensation' of RIC and Dublin Metropolitan Police members, undated [reverse contains interview with Irish-American MR O'Connor, recent purchaser of the town of Leitrim]; (iii) blank form, RIC Pensions, application for a further supply of pension vouchers; (iv) Postcard addressed to B Byrne, Ferulea Hotel, Adelaide St, Dun Laoighaire, Co Dublin, and signed 'from the Black Hell', Grange, Sligo, postmarked 10 Oct 1941; (v) small newscutting, undated, regarding a convict at Middlesex sessions who requested penal servitude. Evidently contained in an envelope, postmarked Sligo May 1945, addressed to Mr Beirne, 17 Spencer Villas, Dun Laoghaire; (vi) printed letter addressed to B Byrne, Spencer Villas, Dun Laoghaire, from the Dublin Cemeteries, Apr 1945, regarding renewal of family grave dressing fee at Prospect Cemetery; (vii) letter to 'Mr Beirne' from [MM Bechmans], Ursuline Convent, St Joseph's, Sligo, 14 May 1945, regarding the poor health of Sister Mary Felix.
