Scope and ContentPapers of George Brennan, Lieutenant, 1st West India Regiment, and Lane's Hotel, St Alban's Place, London, regarding his finances and debts.
1. Undated note by Major Fred [BP White], 1st West India Regiment, certifying that Lt Brennan will be entitled to retire from the service on a gratuity of £1200 on completion of twelve years' service in November 1879.
2. Stamped and witnessed letter dated 30 Apr 1879 from Brennan to Henry Watson Parker acknowledging receipt this day of £300, for which he has given Parker a promissary note at 5% interest. He undertakes to repay the loan from the £1200 he is to receive on his anticipated retirement in November from his regiment on completion of his twelve years' service. Witness: Bernard Parker.
3. Letter dated 26 Jun 1879 from Thomas Mason, 8, Leadenhall St, London, to Brennan, stating his claim on him in respect of two cheques 'received from a West Indian correspondent', on which £50 is still owing.
4. Letter dated 21 Jun 1879 from Brennan, Lane's Hotel, to the Duke of Norfolk, Norfolk House, asking 'with feelings of the greatest regret and shame' for a further loan of £200, in addition to the earlier loan provided by the Duke through Mr Parker. He explains that he has been 'misled and disappointed' by another source, and cannot put off the payment now due until after his retirement in November. 4pp.
5. Stamped payment order dated 6 Oct 1879 from Brennan instructing Messrs Cox & Co, Craig's Court, Charing Cross, to pay Messrs Lawrence & Phillips & Co the sum of £60.
6.-9. Bills issued by Lane's Hotel to Brennan, two undated [1879], two dated 19 Feb 1880 and 1 Apr 1880. Two are stamped as paid.
10.-11. Two rough undated notes of Brennan's debts. One is headed 'Lieut Brennan'.
12.-14. Records of life assurance policies taken out by Brennan with the Provident Clerks' Mutual Life Assurance Company in 1879. Present are a receipt for a policy taken out on 30 April (for £300 at a premium of £3 13s), the stamped policy document of this date, and a stamped policy document dated 9 July, for £200 at a premium of £2 8s 8d. Both policies are for a term of one year.
15. Envelope addressed to H Watson Parker, St Michael's Rectory, Cornhill, stamped London SW Jul23 [79]. One penny stamp.
16. Envelope marked 'Duke of Norfolk / Brennan / Original Papers / F1'. All items were evidently originally placed in this envelope.
