Scope and ContentManuscript volume entitled (p1) 'Poems by the Lindsay Family, Friends and Relatives'. The volume contains transcriptions, in one hand, of poems and verse plays by members of, or relating to, the Lindsay family, descendants of the earls of Crawford and earls of Balcarres in the Scottish peerage. The earl of Crawford is considered head of 'Clan Lindsay' ('Earl Crawford's Coronach' on p2). Lindsay poets include Christian (16th century), Sir David (b1490), Lady Margaret (b1752), John Lindsay (b1820, son of Thomas Lindsay, Lindville, Co Tipperary), and John Lindsay, of Wauchopdale, Woodstock, Ontario, Canada ([fl1877, evidently the transcriber], son of John Lindsay of Maryville, Cork). Also present are poems by other poets regarding the family, and translations by family members. A couple of poems are in latin. The final poems present are from 1879-80 (pp321-27), with 'Peace' by FH Du Vernet marked Toronto, March 1879. At the back of the book is an index of authors' names. Throughout are notes by the transcriber giving biographical information on the poets and glosses on the poems.
The volume contains a large selection of poems, many possibly unpublished, and is an interesting genealogical record of the Lindsay family in Scotland, Ireland (including Cork), and Canada.
